Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback is the ascent. A year ago today I was working on some sketches of the shore based on a friend's vacation pics. This was a small sandy path to the top of a bluff overlooking the beach. The more obvious beach ones sold, but I always felt this was the most successful of the pieces from that small series.

This was painted last year after the Supreme Court rulings on DOMA and Prop 8. And yesterday, (my current home state) Indiana's marriage ban was struck down.

Throwback Thursday

Today's throwback is wicker park willows which was one of two pieces painted during the Live Art Show last year at Studio 659. The other sold. This one has been out of my studio recently and was hung on the corner hutch door knobs. Which we never use. I mean there's stuff in there, that we never use. Except that I recently put our dinner plates in there (which we also never use - because, really, we're kind of a paper plate family.) And we've suddenly had to use them a lot, which requires taking down the painting to get in and out of the hutch, and it's kind of a hassle. My husband has asked that I find a better place to put this piece. Maybe you have a better place  for this, like in your own home or office?

Throwback Thursday

It's summer vacation and the days are flowing one into another. I spent most of today thinking it was Saturday. I've been taking my son for more car rides now that he is out of school and I've been watching this spot every time I drive by.

I think it's dead. 

Really. I don't know what kind of small trees these are but they didn't leaf out, and we're nearly halfway though June and everything else is green. It survived last year's burn. How can this favorite little spot of mine be dead?

This week's throwback is backlit. Last night I was driving into the sun and was nearly blinded. Right near Wicker Park the trees were nearly blackened out because they were backlit, and it reminded me of this piece.

Throwback Thursday (and surprise sale!)

This week's throwback is a two-fer. These two america paintings from 2012 are currently at Paul Henry's Art Gallery in Hammond. They will be there until Tuesday when I swap them out for some new work. The thing is, I don't really want to bring them home. So if you buy one (or both!) from Dave at Paul Henry's, they'll be half price. Really.

This week's throwback is am #art365 from last year. We've had a late spring, so most of the magnolias have lost just a few petals. We aren't yet at the carpeted lawn stage.

Throwback Thursday

This week's Throwback Thursday is from this date last year. This was a view from one of my drives with my son. We were right at the point where farm fields are starting to be turned over, or not. I was thinking about this piece (unturned) and what I always felt was the companion piece, fallow, last week as I was driving through western New York. It is hilly there and you can see field after field after field. They are all different colors, depending if they've been plowed or planted. So you're getting a two-fer for this week. These were both based on  the same stretch of road, one field after the next.

I didn't really have a plan for today's Throwback Thursday post, but then I saw my little chionodoxa coming up. This pic is almost one year to the date, although we are not nearly as far into spring this year as last.

Sometimes the wrong thing IS the right thing to be doing.

I picked out this piece for for today's throwback yesterday morning. A couple of hours later, my friend posted that today was going to be Throat Punch Thursday. It is entirely coincidental. And by no means is this post an endorsement of any alleged throat punching.

Throwback Thursday

I painted this right before the Safety and America show. I was considering this piece at the time part of the america series, which were figurative abstracts disguised as landscapes, but this was a real place. I hadn't yet started the #art365 landscapes but I was focused enough on the look of landscapes that I was noticing them show up in friends' vacation pictures. And I had started painting them whenever one caught my eye.

Throwback Thursday

As promised, (or threatened?) I found the pages of the book. Last week's throwback was the cover. Here are a couple of the pages. The text was etched, although sadly not really bit as long as it should have been. The images are gum dichromate prints. Each layer of color around the edge is a different layer of printing. I really loved this type of printing.

In my search for some ink drawings (which I did not find and am a little concerned about...) I stumbled across this. Once upon a time, I did a lot of photography. With a real camera. With film. This was the cover of a limited edition book. It looks like a half sheet of film, so I'd guess about 5" x 8" on the image size. I didn't measure it. This is a van dyke brown print on linen. The inside was filled with gum prints and the text was a combination of etchings and drypoints. The pages of the book are in another box, because I only assembled one book. I'll dig them out and share them in another post.

Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback is breakdown. This was one of my white paintings. I was challenging myself to move away from super saturated colorwork and go for something more subtle. There is still a lot of color in it but it's diluted with a ton of titanium white. The first time I tried to make a white painting, I ended up with a mostly red canvas (which has since become something else...) 

Art is a journey.

Throwback Thursday

Today's throwback is from today's date last year: the quarry.

Thornton Quarry is just over the state line from me and the tollway actually goes right over it. You can see a not quite street view of it here. There is a high horizon line from the road which I was thinking of when I painted this piece.

Throwback Thursday

It is dreary and raining here and we will need a boat if this continues. So I thought a warm cheery piece was in order for today's throwback. This is one of the early ink drawings, from the series I eventually called All the Things I Never Said, and some other secrets. While most of the ink drawings have a funny-sad quality, this one is just happy.

Fun fact to know and share: One of the layers in this piece says it was as if all the planets had aligned. This line of text also shows up in seneca.

Throwback Thursday

Today's Throwback Thursday is from last year. With so much artwork created last year through my #art365 plan, it occurred to me that some Thursday's would fall on a day where last year's creation was still available. At this time last year, I was delivering america series paintings to The Edge, a coffee shop in Crete, Illinois and did 3 pieces featuring the farm fields in the area. This piece is now in COLD at Sip in Crown Point.
